A neutral, sturdy shipping box, tissue paper inside sealed with a sticker, and an insert card with a few personal lines…and that’s it.

No personalized outer packaging, no elaborately printed gift boxes, and no EU-wide shipping.

There are solid reasons for that. Because what often looks “minimalist” to customers is, in reality, the result of a strategic emergency brake. As a solo self-employed business, I’m operating in a legal and administrative tension field that has long since become a real minefield for small labels. Come with me for a quick look behind the scenes – and especially at the new EU laws.

The EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) and the logo nightmare

Since the new EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR – Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) came into force, the winds in e-commerce have shifted dramatically. The regulation aims to reduce waste across Europe and strengthen the circular economy. A sensible idea in principle, but unfortunately in practice it hits small businesses with full force.

Here’s the key legal stumbling block as to why I don’t use printed shipping boxes or branded cartons:

Standard packaging vs. custom packaging: If I buy normal, unprinted standard shipping boxes from an EU retailer, primary conformity responsibility (e.g., issuing the required EU Declaration of Conformity and technical documentation under Art. 33 PPWR) lies with the original manufacturer of the base packaging. I simply use them as intended.

“Producer” status through printing: But as soon as I have boxes or bags printed with my logo or my brand colors, I’m suddenly considered the legal producer of that customer-specific packaging.

In plain terms, that means: for every single packaging size, I’d have to issue a formal EU Declaration of Conformity, compile technical documentation (including hazardous substance and material evidence) in a folder, and keep it readily available for years. On top of that come huge minimum order quantities (MOQs) that make no sense at all for small runs. The risk of being stuck with expensive, misinvested packaging material just because laws change isn’t economically viable.

The necessary solution: Neutral boxes plus high-quality paper stickers or stamps with my logo. It’s flexible, legally falls under straightforward standard processes, and keeps creative freedom high—without my desk turning into a compliance office.

Why hangtags and thank-you cards are allowed to stay

Legally speaking (under both the PPWR and the German Packaging Act), a hangtag attached directly to a garment or product is not considered packaging. It’s product labeling, similar to a sewn-in care label or the fiber content information.

It doesn’t enclose the product as protective wrapping for transport; it serves to inform and present the item itself. That’s why I don’t have to pay packaging licensing fees for my hangtags via a dual system (like LUCID / Der Grüne Punkt), and they’re completely outside the PPWR packaging jungle.

That makes them the perfect, legally secure way to show brand, materials, and attention to detail directly on the product—without feeding bureaucratic windmills. Of course, I’m registered with LUCID and Der Grüne Punkt for the packaging (box/letter, tissue paper, and paper parcel tape) and pay a fee for it. I think that’s right, because it supports environmentally conscious action by charging fees for what objectively counts as packaging.

And the thank-you card in the parcel?

Exactly the same applies to the insert or thank-you cards you’re holding in your hands when you open a parcel—whether it’s with a sweet note, care instructions, or a link to my website.

Legally speaking, an insert card is printed material / promotional item that’s added loosely to the shipment. It fulfils neither the protective nor the transport function of packaging. It’s sourced separately (often via standard paper or printing services) and triggers no manufacturer or conformity obligations under the packaging regulation.

That means both hangtags and thank-you cards can still remain a way to carry the brand, the message, and the love of detail.

No EU-wide or worldwide shipping: when bureaucracy limits the single market

Some people asked me even before this shop launched why I don’t simply ship my handmade knits and booklets all over the world or to every EU country. At first glance, it can also seem like a bad business decision to shut out millions of potential customers. Here, too, the answer is: bureaucracy and admin overload swallow up any economic common sense.

Anyone selling to other EU countries today faces a massive wall of national special rules:

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): Almost every EU country now requires its own local register and fee-based systems for packaging, electrical equipment, or textiles. You have to register separately for each country, sign contracts with local licensing partners (PROs), and submit annual reports in the local language.

Authorized representative requirements: For cross-border trade, in some cases there are strict rules requiring you to appoint authorized representatives locally—something a one-person business model simply can’t manage (even if the EU, under pressure from Parliament, is currently trying to explore relief for micro-enterprises, the patchwork remains enormous).

Tax effort (OSS): The One-Stop Shop does make VAT reporting within the EU easier, but tax classification for returns, delivery thresholds, and differing tax rates eats up a huge amount of time.

As a small business, I want to put my energy into what makes MEEMEA what it is. For me, that’s designing, developing patterns, the quality of the materials, and creative exchange. Every hour I’d have to put into international licensing bureaucracy is an hour missing at my workbench.

If you want to read more about this in official EU sources, you can find information here: Packaging Waste.

Conclusion

Transparency matters to me. The decision to deliberately forgo worldwide shipping, printed boxes, and a huge marketing-packaging effort isn’t about convenience—it’s pure self-protection.

The fact that my hangtags and thank-you cards remain free from this regulatory madness is a wonderful relief. This way, the focus stays on the craft, the materials, and the projects made with passion.

If you order knitted designs or booklets from me, you’ll eventually receive a shipment that might seem unassuming or impersonal […]

[208,106

post-1194","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-behind-the-stash-2","category-journal-2
["GET
